Principles of Het Nieuwe Rijden (Eco-Driving)

Adopting modern eco-driving saves up to 10% on fuel and cuts greenhouse emissions:

  1. Early Upshifting:
    • Petrol / Hybrid: Shift up between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM.
    • Diesel: Shift up between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM.
    • Drive smoothly at steady speeds in the highest gear possible.
  2. Decelerate in Gear (Brandstofafsluiting):
    • When approaching a red light or roundabout, let the car roll out in gear with your foot off the accelerator.
    • Modern engines feature overrun fuel cut-off: the fuel injectors shut off completely (0.0 l/100km). Rolling in neutral still burns idling fuel (~1.0 l/hour).
  3. Aerodynamic Drag & Auxiliary Energy:
    • Remove empty ski boxes and roof racks immediately (cuts drag by 10%–20%).
    • At speeds above 80 km/h, open windows increase drag more than running the air conditioner.

Environmental Zones (Milieuzones)

  • Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Arnhem, etc.) operate low-emission zones (milieuzones - Sign C22a).
  • Older diesel cars that do not meet designated Euro emission standards are prohibited from entering.

Essential Statutory Rules (RVV 1990)

  • Upshifting: shift up between 2,000 and 2,500 RPM for petrol engines, and between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM for diesel engines.
  • Rolling out in gear: modern electronic fuel injection cuts off fuel completely (0.0 l/100km).
  • Driving with open windows at motorway speeds consumes more fuel than operating air conditioning.
  • Remove empty roof racks and cargo boxes immediately: they add 10% to 20% to aerodynamic drag.
  • Environmental zones (milieuzones): restrict access for high-emission older diesel vehicles.
CBR Exam Insight & Common Pitfall

Rolling in gear with foot off the accelerator consumes ZERO fuel due to automatic fuel cut-off! Rolling in neutral still burns idling fuel.
