Zipper Merging (Ritsen) & Traffic Jam Procedures
Correct Zipper Merging (Ritsen)
When two lanes narrow into one due to roadworks or lane drops:
- Do NOT merge too early: Merging kilometers ahead leaves empty asphalt and lengthens the traffic queue behind.
- Continue driving up to 50–100 meters before the lane drop: Match your speed to traffic in the adjacent lane.
- The 1-on-1 principle: Every driver on the open lane smoothly allows one vehicle from the closed lane to slip in.
Traffic Jams and the Hard Shoulder (Vluchtstrook)
- Using the emergency lane / hard shoulder to bypass traffic jams to reach an exit is strictly forbidden.
- When arriving at the back of a sudden jam: Turn on your hazard warning flashers (alarmlichten) briefly to warn approaching high-speed traffic behind you. Turn them off once vehicles behind you have slowed down safely.
Essential Statutory Rules (RVV 1990)
- Zipper merging (ritsen): merge at equal speeds approximately 50 to 100 meters before the barrier.
- Drivers on the continuous lane must each allow ONE vehicle from the terminating lane to merge.
- Emergency lane (vluchtstrook): driving, stopping, or overtaking on the hard shoulder is strictly prohibited except in emergencies.
- Hazard warning lights should be briefly activated when approaching the tail of a sudden traffic jam on a motorway.
Do NOT zipper merge kilometers early! Continue driving up to approximately 50 to 100 meters before the obstruction, then merge smoothly.
