Straight-Ahead on the Same Road (Rechtdoor op Dezelfde Weg)

Under Article 18(1) of the RVV 1990:

β€œDrivers who turn off must give way to traffic that is approaching them on the same road or is traveling alongside or behind them on the same road.”

Crucial Distinction: Traffic vs. Drivers

  • Unlike the rule for traffic from the right (which applies only to bestuurders), this rule applies to ALL traffic (verkeer).
  • That means a pedestrian walking along the sidewalk continuing straight ahead has right of way over a car turning right or left across their path!
  • Always check your right exterior mirror and blind spot over your shoulder for cyclists riding along the cycle path before turning right.

Short Turn Before Long Turn (Korte Bocht Gaat Voor Lange Bocht)

Under Article 18(2) RVV 1990:

  • When two opposing drivers turn into the same side street:
    • The driver turning right makes a short turn and has right of way.
    • The driver turning left makes a long turn and must yield.

Essential Statutory Rules (RVV 1990)

  • Straight-on traffic on the same road has priority over all traffic turning off that road (protects parallel cyclists and pedestrians).
  • Short turn goes before long turn: a driver turning right takes precedence over an opposing driver turning left into the same side street.
  • A driver turning into a road must give way to pedestrians walking along that road if the pedestrians are continuing straight.
CBR Exam Insight & Common Pitfall

Rechtdoor op dezelfde weg applies to ALL traffic, including crossing pedestrians and parallel cyclists continuing straight along your road!
