Bus Lanes: LIJNBUS vs. BUS
- Lijnbusstrook (Marked ‘LIJNBUS’): Exclusively reserved for scheduled public transport buses (lijnbussen). Regular passenger cars, taxis, and private coaches may not use it.
- Busstrook (Marked ‘BUS’): Dedicated to all buses, including chartered private tour coaches and commercial taxis possessing an official exemption permit.
Bus Leaving a Bus Stop (Wegrijdende Bus)
Under Article 56 RVV 1990:
- Inside built-up areas (Binnen de bebouwde kom): When a bus driver signals left to pull away from a designated bus stop, you must give way and allow the bus to merge into your lane.
- Outside built-up areas (Buiten de bebouwde kom): The rule does NOT apply. The bus driver must yield to all passing traffic before pulling away.
Essential Statutory Rules (RVV 1990)
- LIJNBUS lane: exclusively reserved for scheduled municipal/regional public transport buses.
- BUS lane: open to all public buses, private touring coaches, and authorized taxis with permits.
- A bus leaving a bus stop inside built-up areas has right of way when indicating left.
- Outside built-up areas, a departing bus does NOT have right of way; it must yield to approaching traffic.
A bus signaling left to leave a bus stop inside built-up areas MUST be given way by following drivers! Outside built-up areas, the bus must wait.
