Electric Vehicles (EV), Regenerative Braking & Pedestrian Safety
Electric Vehicle (EV) Driving Dynamics
Electric vehicles have distinct characteristics tested on the 2026 CBR exam:
- AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System):
- At speeds below 20 km/h and during reversing, EVs must emit an artificial humming sound to alert pedestrians, especially the visually impaired.
- One-Pedal Driving (Regenerative Braking):
- Releasing the accelerator uses the electric motor as a generator to slow the vehicle down without touching the brake pedal.
- Brake Light Activation: By law, brake lights must automatically illuminate whenever regenerative deceleration exceeds statutory deceleration thresholds.
- Weight and Kinetic Energy:
- Heavy battery packs mean EVs can weigh 300–600 kg more than comparable petrol cars. This extra mass increases momentum and braking distances on wet or icy roads.
Essential Statutory Rules (RVV 1990)
- AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System): mandatory artificial sound up to 20 km/h to warn blind and vulnerable pedestrians.
- One-pedal driving / Regenerative braking: releasing the accelerator slows the car down while capturing energy back into the high-voltage battery.
- Heavy battery pack increases vehicle mass, resulting in longer braking distances and high kinetic energy.
- Instant electric motor torque: high risk of wheel slip when accelerating on wet tram rails or cobbles.
Because electric cars make virtually zero engine noise, cyclists and pedestrians often fail to hear your approach at low speeds. Watch for AVAS.
