Trams at Equal Intersections

Under Article 15(2) RVV 1990:

  • Trams always have right-of-way over all other drivers at equal, unmarked intersections, whether approaching from the left or right.
  • Exceptions: Trams must obey:
    1. Operating traffic lights.
    2. Police officer hand signals.
    3. Priority signs facing them (B6 give-way, B7 stop sign) or shark teeth on their tracks.

Funeral Processions (Uitvaartstoet / Rouwstoet)

Under Dutch law (Wet op de lijkbezorging & Article 16 RVV 1990), an official funeral procession displays special black mourning flags on both the left and right front of each vehicle.

  • On Equal Intersections: Once the lead vehicle of a recognized funeral cortege has crossed an unmarked junction, no driver may cut through or sever the procession.
  • Exceptions: If you are driving on a designated priority road (Sign B1) or have a green traffic light, you do not have to yield to a funeral procession approaching from a side road.

Military Convoys (Militaire Kolonne)

  • Lead vehicle: Two blue flags on the front and a blue light.
  • Middle vehicles: Blue flag on the right and a blue light.
  • Tail vehicle: Green flag on the right and a green light.
  • Once the lead vehicle has passed an intersection with a green light or right-of-way, the entire convoy may proceed, and other drivers may not cut in between them.

Essential Statutory Rules (RVV 1990)

  • Trams always have right of way at equal intersections, whether coming from left or right.
  • A military convoy (militaire kolonne) displaying blue/green flags and lights may not be severed by other drivers once the lead vehicle has legally entered.
  • A recognized funeral procession with black official flags on left and right may not be interrupted at equal junctions.
  • Priority vehicles (blue lights + siren) override all convoys, trams, and general rules.
CBR Exam Insight & Common Pitfall

A funeral procession (rouwstoet) may NOT be cut off at equal junctions once the lead car has passed, BUT traffic on priority roads (B1) or at green lights has priority over it.
